Memory Foam Adjustable Bed
The Memory Foam Adjustable Bed: Information for UK Consumers
When considering a sleep system, many UK consumers find memory foam products particularly attractive. Here's some general information from Laybrook about the memory foam adjustable bed.
What is Memory Foam?
Memory foam is one of the many technological advances that have come out of the US space program. In the 1970's, scientists at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) were looking for ways to help astronauts cope physically with the tremendous gravitational forces associated with launching a space vehicle. They had a theory that the best way to reduce the stress of g-forces on the body would be to surround the body with a type of material that would provide a customised foam cradle to protect the astronaut. They also needed a foam that would accommodate body movements or shifts in position. Visco-elastic memory foam was the result.
Commercialisation of Memory Foam
In the 1980s, a Swedish foam manufacturer began exploring if and how memory foam technology could be applied to consumer products. In the 1990s, the result was the launch of the iconic brand name Tempur-Pedic® in sleep products in both Europe and North America. The memory foam mattress was wildly successful and this success spurred other manufacturers in Canada and the United States to develop their own lines of sleep systems and upholstered furniture.
What to Look For in a Memory Foam Bed
When shopping for a memory foam bed, the first things to consider are your body shape, weight and height. Height is an important consideration because the taller you are, the more dispersed your weight is over the mattress. This positive dispersal results in virtually no pressure points and a remarkable conformity to your body. A good memory foam mattress does not require a box spring. Rather, the mattress is often placed on a platform. If you're replacing a conventional mattress with memory foam but not replacing your box spring, put plywood on top of the box spring to provide a stiffer surface and better support.
A Lower-Cost Solution: Memory Foam Mattress Toppers
For affordability, you might want to consider a memory foam bed mattress topper. This is a thick slab of foam that you place on top of your existing mattress to compensate for any loss of support, solidity or integrity. This option works for mattresses that aren't completely worn out because any bumps and lumps in the mattress will be felt through the memory foam. A memory foam topper should not be used on a mattress that sags. Placing a topper over a sag will not fill it in. A sagging mattress does not provide the proper support for the spine. Spinal misalignment can cause medical problems. The topper should be between 1 and 4 inches thick.
Whether you choose a full memory foam adjustable bed or just a simple mattress topper, this material has proven in the US, UK and elsewhere to provide deeper, longer and more restorative sleep.
