Rise and recline beds and their benefits

Is a rise and recline bed the right choice for you? Also known as, a rise and recline bed is a type of adjustable bed that allows you to adjust the position of the bed:

  • to achieve the most comfortable and supportive position for sleeping
  • as well as for sitting up or getting in and out of bed.

But what are the benefits of a riser bed, and is there any science behind these benefits?

This type of bed is also known as a riser bed, high-low bed or height adjustable bed. We also call them carers beds, and sometimes they’re called a hospital bed or a medical bed. This can depend on the style and aesthetics of the bed. We also offer a variation of the riser bed which is called a chair bed

Benefits of a rise and recline bed

The main benefits of a riser bed include:

Improved comfort:

With a rise and recline bed, you can adjust the position of the bed to find the most comfortable sleeping or sitting position. This can help to reduce pressure on specific areas of the body, such as the back or hips, and can also help to alleviate pain. They can also help alleviate symptoms of certain health conditions, such as:

  • acid reflux
  • snoring
  • sleep apnea.

Enhanced independence:

Riser beds can help users to maintain your independence, as you can adjust the position of the bed yourself without needing assistance from a carer or family member.

Enhanced mobility:

Rise and recline beds can help people with mobility issues get in and out of bed more easily, as the bed can be raised or lowered to a comfortable height.

Improved circulation:

By adjusting the position of the bed, you can improve your circulation, which can help to reduce swelling and discomfort in the legs and feet and improve overall health.

Reduced risk of falls:

Rise and recline beds can help to reduce the risk of falls, as you can adjust the position of the bed to a comfortable height for getting in and out of bed, reducing the need to reach or strain to get up.

Improved sleep:

By finding a comfortable and supportive sleeping position, users of rise and recline beds can improve the quality of their sleep, which can have a positive impact on overall health and wellbeing.

Customisation:

Rise and recline beds come in a variety of sizes and styles, and can be customised with different mattress types and features to suit individual needs and preferences.

Overall, a rise and recline bed can be a valuable investment for anyone who experiences discomfort or difficulty getting in and out of bed, as well as those who are looking to improve their overall comfort and wellbeing.

Is there any science behind the benefits or a rise and recline bed?

Yes, there is scientific research that supports the benefits of using a rise and recline bed, particularly for people with certain health conditions or mobility issues: for improved comfort, mobility, posture, and respiratory function.

Improved sleep quality:

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that using an adjustable bed with an inclined upper body position improved sleep quality and reduced symptoms of acid reflux. In addition, using a rise and recline bed can be beneficial for people with respiratory conditions, such as COPD or sleep apnea. By adjusting the position of the bed, people can find a more comfortable sleeping position that can help reduce symptoms and improve breathing.

Reduced back pain:

A study published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science found that using an adjustable bed with a reclined position reduced lower back pain and improved spinal alignment, which can help reduce pain and discomfort in the back, neck, and shoulders.

Improved circulation:

A study published in the Journal of Vascular Nursing found that using an adjustable bed helped to improve circulation and reduce swelling in the legs and feet of people with chronic venous insufficiency. Similarly a study published in the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care found that using an adjustable bed with a leg elevation feature improved circulation and reduced swelling in the legs.

Increased independence:

A study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing found that using an adjustable bed with a rise feature increased independence and improved quality of life for people with Parkinson's disease. The survey also shows such a bed reduced the need for assistance with activities of daily living in elderly patients.

Reduced discomfort:

One study published in the Journal of Wound Care found that using a rise and recline bed can reduce the risk of pressure ulcers in patients with limited mobility. The study found that patients who used a rise and recline bed had a significantly lower incidence of pressure ulcers compared to those who used a standard bed.

Overall, scientific evidence supports the use of a rise and recline bed for improving comfort, sleep quality, circulation, and independence, especially for people with mobility issues or health conditions that affect their sleep. A rise and recline bed can be a valuable investment for those with mobility issues or health conditions that affect their sleep. It provides improved comfort, mobility, and independence, and can be customized to meet individual needs.

The starting bed height is also very important when purchasing a variable height adjustable bed.

If the person has difficulty getting their legs into bed, it is better to have the bed as low as possible, this makes it easier to lift their legs onto the bed, the person can then use the variable height feature to stand up, just like how a riser recliner chair stands a person up.

Bed Height Adjustment for Carers Beds

We can alter the height of your bed to make entering and exiting your bed easier.

The standard height for our carers beds is 23.5 inches from the floor to the top of the mattress.

You can lower the bed by up to 2 inches and increase the height by up to 4 inches.

You can measure your own bed and adjust your order to suit your needs.

If you are unsure, please call our adjustable bed experts and allow them to assess you. They can give you advice on getting the correct height of your bed for your body height.

Please note: choosing to adjust the height of your bed may limit the choices with regard to underbed drawers
