1 - Chair sizing. (2 standard sizes)

Laybrook have designed two standard sized Lincoln bed chairs, the smaller chair is designed for persons between 5ft and 5ft 7” and the larger version of the stock chair-beds are designed to fit persons between 5ft8 8” & 6ft 3”.

This is achieved by using back and seat fillers to easily adjust the seat depth and height.

By adding a 2” filler behind the back of the mattress (to reduce the seat depth) and/or adding a seat filler under the seat to adjust the seat height by 2” easy to adjust and fit.

These two chairs are designed so the fillers can be easily added or removed enabling the bed to fit anyone from 5ft to 6ft 3” with bespoke options also available.

2 - Recycling for other users

OT stores may never recycle riser recliner chairs that are manufactured bespoke. Riser recliner chairs returned to stores generally stay there, as OTs have to find/remember a person with the same dimensions the bespoke chair was originally designed for.

With the Lincoln, we are confident most community OTs know a person between 5ft and 5ft 7 (wide or narrow hipped) that sleep in a riser recliner chair. The Lincoln bed chair is being recycled now from community stores, reducing waste and saving costs over the long term.

3 - Skin Integrity

Standard riser recliner chairs are not designed to be slept in for a multitude of reasons. The fabrics and foams used in these chairs are designed for sitting and can cause pressure sores due to the thin firm foams and non stretch fabrics used.

Leakage from legs and incontinence also damage the structure of the fabric and foams.

The Lincoln bed chair uses different depths and densities of foam depending on the user's weight, we also use a high risk mattress for persons at risk of pressure sores and a dynamic air flow system for persons with a very high risk of pressure sores.

All foam mattresses use between 6 and 8 inches of foam depending on the weight of the person, which is comparable to a standard hospital mattress.

The outer materials used on the Lincoln’s mattresses are wipeable and washable, using a 4-way stretch material for pressure care and are easily cleaned.

4 - Pressure sores and drop foot.

The leg section on all riser recliner chairs are designed so that when the footrest rises, the users feet hang over the foot section of the chair, this can cause pressure sores on the back of the ankle, circulation problems and/or drop foot.

The solution to this is to have an extending foot plate to support the feet, like they are supported in a bed. The Lincoln bed chair has an integrated, 4 inch footplate that extends when the legs of the bed chair rise, giving the correct support – reducing drop foot, eliminating pressure sores behind the ankle. It is important that the user has the correct positioning to achieve this which is easily achieved on the Lincoln.

5 - Carers and back issues: VARIABLE HEIGHT FEATURE

Riser recliner chairs can damage a carer's back if they are tending to a person on the chair, this is due to the low height of most riser recliners.

Scenario 1: This can lead to the care staff refusing to treat the needs of the person in the chair; the OT may have to organise for a hoist, a bed and maybe a stairlift to be brought in to get the person back into a bed. This then requires carers to put the person to bed at a time the do not necessarily want to go, to be put in a hoist that reduces their dignity and costs the NHS time and money. If an elderly person then needs to use the toilet in the night, they will be unable to get back into bed, so they return to sleeping in the riser recliner chair that caused the issues in the first place.

Scenario 2: Patient has to go to hospital due to pressure sores. (See scenario 1).

The Lincoln bed chair overcomes this by being the only bed chair in the UK with the functions above and having a VARIABLE HEIGHT FUNCTION for personal care, enabling the user to increase their mobility, encouraging better mental health, saving the cost of the equipment and nursing.

6 - Lymphoedema / Lypoedema: TILT IN SPACE FEATURE WITH UP TO 20 STONE LEGLIFT.

Many people are unable to get into bed due to the chronic swelling and weight associated with lymphoedema, using a riser recliner chair exacerbates the issue as the chairs are designed so the person's feet overhang the footplate of the chair. This puts pressure behind the ankle, can reduce blood flow, fluid drainage and can cause drop foot. The Lincoln Chairbed with its 8 motors and motorised foot extension supports the legs and feet, can independently tilt the two front motors, lifting the feet above the heart thus encouraging blood flow back to the heart and taking fluid away from the legs. Our 40st version has a 20st leg-lift, variable height functionality and vertical and/or tilt function to stand up.

7 - Sleeping flat

Many users like the option of sleeping flat however in many cases the user actually sleep in a slightly elevated position rather than flat, this can be due to breathing difficulties, pain or a multitude of other medical related issues. The Lincoln Chairbed gives the user the option to sleep either way, covering all situations and when a patient needs turning, it is useful for the carers to be able to put the Chairbed horizontal enabling better patient positioning.

The Lincoln bed chair is an infinitely better alternative to sleeping in a riser recliner and as good as sleeping in a traditional hospital bed. Saves the cost of carers attending in the morning and evening, much more dignified and convenient as you go to bed when you want.
